My name is Jonathan Ooi, and I am a Malaysian Crossfit athlete and coach currently residing in Brunei.
I would say the last 3 years have been somewhat hard on me as a Crossfit athlete. In August 2017, I suffered a serious injury tearing my ACL and Meniscus on my right knee. I wasn’t sure at the time what to expect from the surgery, but nevertheless, in early 2018, I underwent surgery and the long road to recovery began.
The start of 2019 was interesting, firstly, the Crossfit Games announced their qualification change allowing national champions to qualify to the games. This provided everyone with a platform to shine and at the end of 2019 Opens, I somehow managed to 1st for Malaysia. Unfortunately, due to a mishap that I wasn't aware of, the Crossfit Games reviewing committee decided that one of my attempts was not sufficient enough and decided to put a penalty on my score which made me drop from first down to sixth, giving my spot to someone else.
I was completely devastated, coming back from an injury was hard enough but coming back from an injury to think that you worked your butt off to finish top and for someone to pull you back down was just a horrible feeling.
However, with the support of my friends, family, teammates and coaches, I have managed to finish 1st in Malaysia in the 2020 Opens and after receiving an official invite, I can finally say that I am on my way to the 2020 Crossfit Games!
I hope you have found some inspiration from my story, there was so many times where I questioned myself, my luck and wanted to throw in the towel, but the support crew that I had was amazing. Wherever you are in the world, find yourself a good team, they can go a long way in helping you!
