Tuesday, 10 September 2013 Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
My name is Chris Steinke and I am an alpine ski racer from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This is my first season with the Canadian Alpine Ski Team.
It all started when I was 2 years old, learning to love skiing at Vorlage in the Gatineau Hills. After 5 great years learning at Vorlage, I moved to the race program at Camp Fortune, where I learned and grew for the next 7 years. For my first year as a Junior, I had an awesome season with the Mont Ste. Marie Junior Ski Team. From there I raced the next three years with the regional NCO FIS Ski Team. For the last two years, I was a member of the Quebec Provincial Ski Team.
As I have grown up in the world of ski racing, it has become abundantly clear to me that it takes an entire community to make a successful ski racer. Parents, family, coaches, clubs, volunteers, trainers, … the list is long! There is an African proverb that says: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Without the help and support of my community, I would not be where I am today.
As I stand at the start of the next exciting chapter in my journey as a ski racer, I realize that I must reach out for support from my larger ski racing community. My Canadian Alpine Ski Team fees are $20,500 this season. Through this MakeAChamp fundraising campaign, I hope to raise $10,250, half my team fees. I am fortunate enough to have someone that will help cover the other half of my team fees. All money raised will go directly to my team fees.
Last season I was the top Canadian slalom skier at World Junior Champs finishing 16th. I am the top ranked Junior slalom skier in Canada as well as the Canadian Junior DH Champion. This season, I look forward to bigger and better performances, both at the World Junior Alpine Ski Championships in Slovakia, and on the NorAm circuit.
The Olympics have always been a huge dream of mine. That dream is now within reach! I plan on proudly representing Canada at the Olympics - perhaps in Sochi, but certainly in Pyeongchang. To continue on my journey to the Olympics, I will need the support of my community! I am stronger and fitter than I have ever been in my life after an incredible summer of dryland training in Calgary. My on snow training in Chile in September has been awesome. I am ready to make my dream a reality.
This is where you come in. I welcome support from anyone and everyone to help me reach my dream. Thank you for your helping me keep my dream alive!

7 Weeks in Colorado.
After my third
week in Colorado, I am skiing faster and feeling more confident than ever. My
fundraising campaign with makeachamp.com was very successful. With all the
generous contributions, I reached my goal of 10,250$!! It was a great
experience running my own crowd funding campaign and I’m inspired by everyone’s support. I feel like
people believe in my dream!
For the past
three weeks we have been training at Copper, Vail, and Loveland. It is anything
but easy training! Course sets have been tricky and snow conditions have been
unpredictable. I have been focusing really hard on improving some technical
things and it has been showing in times! I have been training pretty fast
lately in every discipline. Another upside ... Colorado weather is living up to
its reputation! Sunny and no clouds almost every day means that we have to stay
hydrated and we can’t forget our sunscreen!
We started our
first race not long after we arrived here. After 5 days of skiing, we started
our first Downhill race of the season. This race was anything but ordinary. We were up against some of the best in the world. Names like
Bode Miller, Klaus Kroell (ranked #2 in the world in DH), the whole Austrian
team, and US team. A few days ago we raced a national junior race at Copper,
and I got my first win of the season! Hoping to carry over the fast training
and racing into the NorAms, which start this weekend. GS this weekend and
slalom the following two days. Then back to Copper for some speed races!

T shirts are made!!
The two color options are heather blue (photo) and heather black. Thanks to Phil Eley for helping design it. I love the shirt! Hope everyone else does too :D
I am so grateful and inspired by the outpouring of support and contributions! With just 10 days left, this final push is super important! Please spread the word.

One month in Chile…
We flew into Santiago, Chile on August 29th. We fly home September 28th. This gives us one whole month to get a ton of much needed work done! So far we have done three blocks of training - going on our fourth after this weekend. We started with some basics for a few days then moved into higher intensity training for 7 days. We were on the t-bars way before the sun each morning!
After a couple days off to recover, we hit the slalom training hard. We hammered four days of difficult sets and skills. A couple days off in Santiago and out of the altitude did us well. We spent the days enjoying the fast wifi of the hotel and shopping in the malls!
The third block was double sessions of SG and GS, which makes for long days! The face shot is of me and Tyler Werry going up for our second session. After that last 7 day block, I'm sitting here now with no gas left in the tank. For those who cannot imagine what it's like to ski full intensity at 3000+m high, think about how you'd feel after this: squatting 300lbs 10 times, then heavy sled pushes, followed by sprinting 400m. Repeating that for about 12 runs a day. It all pays off when we review video and times later and see improvements!!
Now it's my job to recover and relax. It's not too hard to enjoy spinning with a gym view like the one in the pic.
Our technician, Pavel, deserves a huge thanks for tuning day after day!! He's been getting all our skis prepped to ski on and making them fast. We lucked out on the room set up!
We want to keep our equipment in top shape, so lately we have been going down the chair at the lower part of the mountain to avoid hitting rocks. The last thing we want is to scratch our bases!
Everyone that comes up here to train posts photos of the sunset. I will not be the one to end that trend! The sunsets and sunrises are breathtakingly beautiful.
I am feeling overwhelmed and blessed by all the contributions to my MakeAChamp campaign so far! It is very appreciated and it motivates me to continue training with 100% effort. Last week here then home for a while!
