Founded in 2001, the McMaster Dragon Boat club entered its first season of competition as a single boat named Holy Mac-Row. While the team itself was small, its mission was ambitious: to advance the growing sport of dragon boat at McMaster University, to develop a reputation of competitive excellence amongst other university teams, to develop a high standard of physical fitness, and to cultivate a strong, spirited community. In 2004, we introduced a second boat named Holy Mac-A-Row-Ni, and a four years later, a third boat, Holy Mac-Attack, was added to accommodate the growing interest in the sport here at McMaster University.
To help further our success, the off-season training regimen has also become more ambitious and sophisticated to match the growing needs of the team. In its first year of competition, McMaster Dragon Boat had only a small open space in the Ivor Wynne Gymnasium to exercise.
Today, our members participate in a well-rounded schedule of weekly land and pool practices as well as cardio, yoga, swimming, and strength conditioning.
Each season, our team competes in four regattas (Milton, Pickering, Toronto Islands, and Montreal) and the accolades we achieve from these regattas grow with each year we compete. This success can be attributed to our team’s strong leadership and the commitment and dedication we have from each paddler on the team.
Note: this year we will be racing in St. Catharines instead of Pickering
