Biography
Hi!
My name is Sara Groenewegen and I have been a member of the Women's Canadian National team since the summer of 2013, which was my senior year of high school.
My favorite moment playing on Team Canada is tied between the gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Championships and qualifying for the 2020 Olympic games on the field I grew up playing on. We won gold in 2015 against Team USA, and The championship game win was the first gold medal for Team Canada Softball in the Pan American Championships in 32 years!
I played college softball at the University of Minnesota and became a 3x All American. I graduated in 2017 with a degree in Sport Management. Minnesota will always hold a very special place in my heart and it will always be considered home. Go Gophers!
I recently conquered an adversity that no one was anticipating. In the summer of 2018, I was given about a 3% chance to live after being placed in a medically induced coma. My body could not oxygenate blood as my lungs were too infected with a severe form of pneumonia called Legionnaires disease. It went undiagnosed for too long and my body could not handle it. I am extremely grateful for my health now and even though I have type 1 diabetes, I will continue to be grateful for my health and for the ability to take the field again with my team!
