Biografia
My name is Maria Soons (born May 14th 2002) and I am half Polish-half Dutch. I have been living in Poland since the age of 2. In Poland I am called Marysia, but my ski team nickname is Mery.
My father used to be an alpine ski instructor so at an early
age I got introduced to racing the ski slopes. I won my first three serious championship
prizes at the age of 7 and it made me want more. After I switched to a ski
clubs that met my ambitions, I started to compete nationally two years ago in
the U-14 category.
My ski club is called KS Narciarnia Nowy Sacz and is amongst the few best performing ski teams in Poland. But I am not there yet! I would like to turn nr’s 2 and 3
into nr’s 1. And I definitely need to improve my Giant Slalom skills. That is
why I train with my ski team: up to 6 times a week in wintertime and 5 times a
week during off season. We have some great training slopes nearby which open
especially for us in the hours before regular ski-fanatics hit the slopes. That
means training from 07.00 till 09.00 and then off to school: hard work!
Our skiing area is great for summer downhill inline slalom skating as well. You should check the ski club's Facebook page for some awesome video clips on this downhill madness!
I live with my parents and older brother in a beautiful national park-area in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountain Range. With lots of good ski slopes just a few minutes drive from home, and really serious alpine peaks within the hour, I have lots of opportunities to train in wintertime. It’s just that the autumn and spring time aren’t reliable seasons. But still: the Austrian glaciers are just 9 hours away, as is the Lithuanian ski dome.
My skiing ambitions: national rankings top 3, get selected for the national youth team, represent my country at the junior FIS-A venues. Further down the line: member of the Polish National Alpine Team and competing in the Europe Cup or even World Cup.
What else is there to know about me: I treat school seriously and when I am not on the slopes, I study –most of the times! I love to read, and love my cat and my second hobby is shooting films and clips. After my skiing career I would like to become a film director.
