Biografia
I am Juan Rico Rulloda, an amateur MMA fighter and Jiu Jitsu blue-belt of Team DEFTAC from the Philippines. Been training since 2008 and after about a year of hard work and dedication, I was selected to be the chapter head for DEFTAC-DLSU; sadly though, injuries kept me from training and competing on a regular and I was forced into a hiatus for the whole year of 2010.
Come 2011, fully recovered and back on track, I decided to go all out! I joined all MMA and Jiu Jitsu competitions that I could to show everyone that I’m back and that I’m committed to make a name for myself and because of this, I was proclaimed Team DEFTAC’s competitor of the year for 2011 and I was given my blue belt by Professor Alvin Aguilar.
Fast forward to 2015, I’m still here,
still making friends in the community, still making waves in the competition scene and making
the sponsors proud. Bagged the gold medal in the gi and nogi rooster weight division
of the Asia Pacific Submissions Absolute Int’l Open (Bronze medal in the open
weight division) and Philippine BJJ Int’l Open and I decided to challenge
myself by joining a heavier weight division in the recently concluded
Rollapalooza hosted by Atos PH wherein I got the silver medal in the light
featherweight division.

Back when I was starting my Jiu Jitsu journey, all I ever wanted to do was to compete and win. Everything was about ME; but as time passed and I grew to learn more about Jiu Jitsu, I also grew to learn a whole lot more about myself. Years of sharing this beautiful gift of Jiu Jitsu to a group of young people also helped me to put things into perspective and because of this, my goals became different. Jiu Jitsu has helped me a lot but it’s not about ME anymore; it’s about the people who NEED Jiu Jitsu in their lives and now it’s time for me to pay that gift forward.
